The Sage's Search for an Ideal Hero
The great sage Valmiki approached the divine Narada, who travels all the worlds, and posed a question born of deep curiosity.
"ఓ నారద మహర్షీ! ఈ భూలోకంలో మంచి గుణములు కలవాడు, పరాక్ర మవంతుడు, ధర్మాత్ముడు, ఎదుటి వారి ఎడల ఆదర భావము కలవాడు, చేసినమేలు మరువని వాడు, ఎల్లప్పుడూ సత్యమునే పలుకువాడు, గట్టి సంకల్పము కలవాడు, అనుకున్న పని నెరవేర్చే గుణము కలవాడు, ఈ సద్గుణములు కలవాడు ఎవరైనా ఉన్నారా!
అంతేకాదు, మంచి నడవడి కలవాడు, సర్వభూతములయందు ప్రీతి కలవాడు, అన్ని విద్యలు నేర్చినవాడు, తనకు అసాధ్యము అంటూ లేదు అని నిరూపించినవాడు, ఎల్లప్పుడూ ఆనందంతో తొణికిస లాడేవాడు. అటువంటి వ్యక్తి ఎవరున్నారు?
ఓ మహర్షీ! మొక్కవోని ధైర్యము కలవాడు, కోపము అంటే ఎరుగని వాడు, మంచి తేజస్సుతో విరాజిల్లేవాడు, అసూయ, ద్వేషములను దగ్గరకు రానీయని వాడు. యుద్ధరంగంలో దిగితే దేవతలకు కూడా భయపడని వాడు. ఇటువంటి సద్గుణములు కల నరుడిని (మానవుడిని) గురించి వినవలెనని నాకు చాలా కుతూహలముగా ఉంది. దయచేసి నాకు వివరించండి."
The Epic Foretold
Narada, who knows the past, present, and future, smiled and replied to Valmiki.
"ఓ మహర్షీ! నీవు చెప్పిన గుణములు సామాన్య మానవులలో సాధారణంగా కనిపించవు. కాని అట్టి గుణములు కలిగిన ఒక మహాపురుషుడు ఉన్నాడు. ఆయన గురించి చెబుతాను, విను."
"ఈ భూమండలంలో ఇక్ష్వాకు వంశము ప్రసిద్ధి చెందింది. ఆ వంశములో రాముడు అనే పేరు గల ఒక మహా పురుషుడు జన్మించాడు."
The Virtues of Rama
Narada then described Rama, the man who embodied all the virtues Valmiki sought:
- స్థిరమైన బుద్ధి కలవాడు, మహావీరుడు, మంచి ప్రకాశము కలవాడు.
- బుద్ధిమంతుడు, నీతిమంతుడు, సకల శాస్త్ర పారంగతుడు.
- శత్రు భయంకరుడు, ఆజానుబాహుడు, విశాలమైన వక్షస్థలము కలవాడు.
- సకల ధర్మములు తెలిసిన వాడు, సత్యమునే పలికెడు వాడు, ప్రజల హితమును కోరేవాడు.
- జ్ఞాన సంపన్నుడు, శరణు కోరిన వారిని రక్షించేవాడు.
- వేదములు వేదాంగములు చదివిన వాడు, ధనుర్వేదములో దిట్ట.
- సర్వలోక ప్రియుడు, సాధుజనుల యందు, దీనుల యందు దయగలవాడు.
- సముద్రము వలె గంభీరంగా, హిమాచలము వలె ధైర్యంగా ఉండేవాడు.
- పరాక్రమములో విష్ణువుతో సమానుడు, ఓర్పులో భూదేవిని, దానములో కుబేరుని, సత్యములో ధర్మదేవతను మించిన వాడు.
The Story in Miniature
Narada then recounted the entire life of this great man, Rama:
His father, Dasharatha, wished to make him the crown prince, but due to the boons given to his wife Kaikeyi, Rama was instead exiled to the forest for fourteen years. His loyal brother Lakshmana and his beloved wife Sita, a woman of supreme virtue, refused to be separated from him and followed him into the wilderness.
While in the forest, Rama protected the sages from the torment of rakshasas. However, the demon king Ravana, angered by the disfigurement of his sister Shurpanakha, devised a plan. With the help of the magical demon Maricha, Ravana distracted Rama and Lakshmana and abducted Sita, carrying her away to his kingdom of Lanka.
Devastated, Rama and Lakshmana began their search for Sita. They allied with the Vanara king Sugriva, helping him defeat his usurper brother Vali. In return, Sugriva dispatched his massive army in all directions. It was the great Hanuman who leaped across the ocean to Lanka, located Sita in the Ashoka grove, and returned with the news of her whereabouts.
With his army of Vanaras, Rama built a bridge across the ocean, stormed the kingdom of Lanka, and after a great war, defeated and killed Ravana. He rescued Sita, but to prove her purity after her captivity, she entered the fire, only to be returned unharmed by the fire god Agni himself.
Finally, Rama returned to Ayodhya, was crowned king, and established a reign of perfect justice and prosperity known as Rama Rajya, ruling for 11,000 years before returning to his divine abode.
